Another major flaw of most retail stores including high-end brands is that the retail staff are rarely trained in diamonds or gemology and as such staff would struggle to explain in detail the difference between two diamonds that appear the same on certificate, and why one is better than the other or what each diamond shape's nuances are and what to look for.

Wholesalers selling to the public look to offer good value diamonds on the surface - when something is priced too good to be true, it usually is. Often the diamonds will be low quality, sub-par cut, low grade clarity bluffy with many inclusions and lacklustre, so what may seem like good value is actually not.
The designs will often have been pre-made in a factory in China or India producing in bulk, without special care and attention to quality, cast in lower gold purity such as 10 or 14 karat gold.

We often hear clients talking about James Allen or Blue Nile - two of the largest online diamond retail stores. Both of these are aggregators of diamond inventory. Whilst they look to have a huge selection of diamonds in their stock, none of the diamonds are owned by them. They rely on suppliers to ship these diamonds once a client makes a purchase, they would seldom physically see any of the diamonds they sell or speak to the suppliers on particulars of each stone.
Before deciding to make a purchase through one of these online jewellery retailers, consider the following. No two diamonds are identical, even if the certificate says they are. There are nuances that neither James Allen nor Blue Nile can point out given their click and buy system. You also cannot speak to a human to guide or navigate your choices. Most people will not know about the difference between VVS1 and VS2, or which diamond shape hides colour best, or which diamond cut requires high clarity and which does not.

We really look into each diamond and we speak to the suppliers to find out all the detail before suggesting the diamond to you. For example in a D-Z range, a diamond may be over-graded i.e. graded a higher colour or clarity, it can also have a grey or brown tint and this is not noted on the report. We can also advise you where you can save money on a piece of jewellery without sacrificing beauty and quality.
Buying from an online aggregate whilst may seem good value may actually end up costing you more as you are not speaking to a diamond expert to make decisions.
